The first commercial mobile phone was launched in Japan in 1978, since then they have come along long way. Records show that in November 2007 the total number of phone subscriptions in the world had reached a staggering 3.3billion, that’s half of the human population making the phone the most widely spread technology and the most common electronic device in the world.

Not only have mobile phones grown more popular over the years but they have also evolved with time. There are now several categories of mobile phones, from basic phones to feature phones such as musicphones and cameraphones, to smartphones.Mobile phones have become somewhat of a necessity for most people to get by in their day to day life. Due to our busy lifestyle and the constant need to be in contact with those around us we have become very dependent on them. A recent survey showed that 18 – 24 year olds would be more willing to go without alcohol, chocolate and sex for 24 hours, than their mobile phone.

Only seven per cent said they would be happy to go without their mobile phone for 24 hours, whereas 39 per cent said they would prefer to go without alcohol, 21 per cent without chocolate and 12 per cent without sex.Manufactures such as Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG are some of the leading brands, all competing against each other to bring out the latest must have phone. With new models constantly hitting the market there is no surprise that mobile phones have become a fashion accessory for some.
