Emoticons can express a feeling of happiness, sadness, anger, boredom, surprise, and a lot more. It can be created with the use of ASCII characters using an input device such as a keyboard or keypad. The most commonly used characters for creating emoticons are the punctuations resembling an actual facial expression. Since it was introduced in texting, emoticons have had many variations. It has been turned to an art in a sense.

Here are the more common emoticons and the punctuation marks it uses:

• ) - This is the close bracket which is mostly used to represent a smile.

• : - The colon is used to represent the eyes.

• - When combining the close bracket and colon, it will create a smiling face.

• - Another variation is by the use of the dash character to put a nose.

• - By replacing the colon to semi colon, it will create a winking emoticon.

• 0;-) - The use of number zero creates an emoticon with a halo.

• - Using the number eight will create an emoticon with a sunglasses.

• - By using the open bracket rather than the close bracket, it will create a frowning face commonly associated with the emotion of sadness.

• - The letter D can also be used to create the emotion of a laughing face.

• - This emoticon conveys the emotion of surprised. It was created by using the letter o.
